I’ve been seeing a lot of women lately who are pre-diabetic. They have high fasting blood sugar levels, most have high triglycerides and are struggling to lose weight. Right now, I’m writing a book on Menopause and the chapter I just finished was about how to lose the Belly Fat.
Are your pants shrinking? Are you looking a pants with hidden elastic waist bands? Are loose fitting tunics all of a sudden an attractive option?
Carbohydrates are foods packed with energy. As our bodies digest and metabolize carbohydrates, sugars are released into the bloodstream and this blood sugar races to our cells providing energy so that we can think, walk, run and function. There’s another key factor here, Insulin.
Our bodies produce insulin in response to eating foods with carbohydrates, becasue insulin’s job is to help transport the glucose to the cells. Insulin is like the friend who knocks on the door and helps the glucose gain admission to the cells. The 2 work together, Insulin and blood sugar.
I love helping people lose weight and keep it off helps prevent diabetes, heart disease and a whole host of other issues. As it turns out, even a 10% drop in weight can be the difference between needing medication or insulin for diabetes and avoiding medication completely.
I know that many people get overwhelmed by the numbers on the scale and the idea that they have to lose 40-50-100 or more pounds. The truth is, that every pound lost is beneficial and even a small 15 pounds makes a huge difference in health.
Kate came in to see me recently for her annual. She wanted to lose weight to try to avoid the diabetes that ran in her family. She was in her 50’s, worked full time, had 2 kids in high school and was very busy. At 5’4″, she knew that 165 pounds was too heavy and she was ready to do something about it. I asked her to tell me about her day, what she ate, what was happening when she ate, hunger pangs and as many circumstances surrounding her food choices as possible. (more…)
