Most women know that doing Kegel exercises can help prevent leaking urine, but many are surprised to learn that being able to isolate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles can also enhance sexual functioning. Really! Strengthening these muscles has the potential to improve sexual sensation, satisfaction and orgasm in women.
It’s never too late
Many of my patients throw in the towel, so to speak, and shrug their shoulders, figuring there’s not much they can do now, and those days are behind them, settling for watching episodes of Outlander.
Studies have confirmed what real women experience – pelvic floor concerns tend to lead to more sexual complaints, from low libido and problems with sexual arousal to inability to achieve orgasm.
“Unfortunately, many women feel that decreased sexual function is an inevitable part of aging,” said Leslie Rickey, MPH, MD, Associate Professor of Urology and of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences; Fellowship Director, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Yale School of Medicine.
Don’t give up!
As Dr. Rickey explains, “Women should know there are self-help strategies, and now home pelvic floor training support with PeriCoach can help improve pelvic floor muscle strength and sexual function at ANY age.”

Coaching helps improve tone
When my patients try to do Kegel exercises, it’s not unusual for them to have difficulty squeezing and contracting just their pelvic floor muscles. Instead of contracting and squeezing, many end up pushing out or relaxing their muscles. Others use their abdominal muscles or buttocks to try to contract their pelvic floor muscles.
Whenever possible, before recommending anything to patients, I like to try them for myself. So, after being reassured that PeriCoach was FDA-cleared for improved sexual functioning, I tried it myself and found that it is so much easier than I thought it would be.
Having sensors on 3 sides of the device with visual feedback on my phone helped me see that I was squeezing the right muscles and I could watch my progress.
I was so impressed that I asked PeriCoach if they would provide a discount for women who wanted to try it for themselves, and they agreed. You can use the discount code Nurse Barb if you’d like to try it for yourself.
I know that there are many, many reasons why women experience difficulties with sexual functioning, and that’s why seeing your health care provider is often the best first step, especially if you’re experiencing any pain with sexual activity.
