Ever since I wrote Your Personal Guide to Menopause thousands of women have written or approached me for advice about what to do for their hot flashes and menopausal symptoms.
Many are understandably reluctant to use hormones and are searching for effective ways to feel better and have less hot flashes and other symptoms. Though there are research studies that show that some women improve with soy or black cohosh, the results are often mixed. Some women do well and others don’t. What with all the different versions of soy food and supplements, it’s always been chalked up to the form of soy studied.
However, researchers in Japan looked at the question a bit differently. Maybe, it was more about how their bodies metabolized the nutrients in soy and utilized those nutrients to change their temperature regulation.
As it turns out, women who metabolize Soy into one of it’s natural metabolites, S-equol have fewer hot flashes. In Asia, this is 50% of women, but in the US more than 70% of US women are unable to metabolize soy into it’s metabolite, S-equol.
The challenge then, was to find a way to provide S-equol as a supplement and see if it would help women who don’t produce S-equol and have hot flashes. Pharmavite, the makers of Nature Made vitamins set out to do just that and they’ve come up with a supplement of S-equol.
Recent research in the Journal of Women’s health reported that women who took S-equol had fewer hot flashes. The results were more pronounced in women who had more than 8 hot flashes each day. This is the Pubmed reference. If you can’t access Pubmed, here is the press release.
The research was so compelling that I started taking S-equol myself. I saw a reduction in hot flashes after 2 weeks. Then I recommended it to some friends and patients, who also had similar experiences with improvement in symptoms.
Because one size doesn’t fit all, I know that women need to know about all of their options when they have hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Many women are looking for hormone free alternatives. Others are interested in natural products. S-equol is both hormone free, natural and will be available over the counter without a prescription.
That’s why if you’re interested in trying S-equol, it’s available free of charge through a sampling trial before it comes to market. In return for the samples, you’ll be asked to complete 3 very brief surveys about your experiences with S-equol.
You can sign up at Naturalequol.com. There’s no obligation and you’ll be able to try it before it comes to market.
Disclosure: I have no financial relationship with NatureMade or S-Equol.
