I’ve never had back issues in my life, that is, until recently when I reached across the kitchen counter and suddenly, my lower back went into a painful spasm. I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary, really. Just reaching across the counter. I tried to walk it off and then went to do some stretches, but the pain only increased. “It must be the fallout from my recent road trip to Los Angeles,” I thought to myself as I dialed the chiropractor.
After icing the area, taking some Advil and seeing Dr. Fitzgerald, who is very understanding and worked me in that day, I tried my best to rest. Oh sure, rest, is just the thing, when there are lots of deadlines looming. I also realized that I hated having my life be limited by this unexpected pain. I can’t rest and just lie around, I have things to do. I also realized that it’s time to get my core in much better shape. I’m one week past the pain and just starting to exercise again. Now, with the very real consequence of life-limiting lower back pain as something that could easily come back and not just be something that is only remotely possible, I’ve been given a major-league “wake up call”.
I thought I was working on my core, but I need to do more. I found this cool video from the San Jose Sharks‘ trainer on strengthening the core, and I’ve started them already. tretching, some yoga and yes, even a plank is helping me. I had to find out the hard way that core strengthening is important, please be smarter and work on strengthening your core now.
